THIS EVENT HAS BEEN MOVED ACROSS THE STREET TO LUCKY!
WE APOLOGIZE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE!
Join our resident craftmistress, Artist and Educator Daniella D., and other local creatives and creative spirits, for a fun February crafternoon. We'll create modern twists on the Victorian Valentine, where heart-themes abound and the art-card creations come out beautifully.
Pick assorted images for your collaging pleasure, whose symbolism will be discussed. Explore the symbolism you relate to most to create your unique card. Learn about Floriography: the secret language of how Victorians communicated hidden desires through flowers, and Vinegar Valentines: hilarious mean-spirited Valentines that were sent anonymously.
History/Herstory: A version of Valentine's Day was observed in Ancient Rome, (it's gory) and it has pagan roots. But the Victorian English people popularized Valentine's cards with the advent of affordable printing and the penny postage stamp. Today we create our take on Victorian Valentines using our retro ribbons, lace, flowers, floral fabric, vintage collage images and magazine photos - all curated art materials from artist Daniella D's personal collection. Gift your finished piece or frame it as a keepsake, with even a simple dollar store frame.
About the artist: Daniella D. is a fun-loving, downtown artist and a Museum Educator with years of experience and a BA in Fine Arts and Art History. She is a warm and welcoming instructor who teaches unusual art activities like this workshop, and Gothic Garden Sketching 101. Daniella loves to work with upcycled materials whenever possible, to create paintings, collages, her House Blessing Shrines and her contemporary folk art/vintage punk ornaments.
Daniella teaches one monthly workshop class at Hekate, which features an art, craft, or costume class for all levels of creative types, or for those who want to incorporate more creativity into their lives. Workshop fees cover all materials and friendly instruction and is payable in person on the day of the class.
